Introduction to Pronunciation

Do you feel frustrated because your pronunciation interferes with your communication? Do people sometimes have trouble understanding you even though you know the right words to say? If you answered yes, then our Introduction to Pronunciation class is the right class for you! This course is specifically designed as a supplemental course for students of all levels. We will work with you individually to assess the areas of your pronunciation that need improvement and guide you through fun, interactive, communicative activities to help you learn.

Introduction to Pronunciation meets either 2 days per week in the afternoons or 1 evening per week. You can choose the schedule that works for you:

Tuesday & Thursday Afternoons

1:30 pm – 3:00 pm

or

Wednesday Evenings

6:00 pm – 9:00 pm

Introduction to Pronunciation classes are offered to students at the following levels:

  • High-Beginner
  • Intermediate
  • High-Intermediate
  • Advanced

Please note: Placement testing is not required for students who only want to take pronunciation classes. However, a demonstrated proficiency at the high-beginner level or above is required.

The following topics are covered as part of our Introduction to Pronunciation course:

Sound Level Topics:

This class will help you understand the sound system of English and explore the relationship between English spelling and pronunciation. We will focus on the specific consonant and vowel sounds that you need to improve for both comprehension and speaking.

Word Level Topics:

This class will help you understand and produce important parts of the English stress system including word stress rules, contractions, reductions, and blending.

Sentence & Discourse Level Topics:

This class will help you build up to higher-level skills such as rhythm, primary phrase stress, intonation, and message units. Sometimes it’s not just what we say, but how we say it!
